Before You Get an Instrument

• Using an old instrument?
  Get it checked and repaired before playing. You don’t want to be fighting the instrument—it will be frustrating.
• Do NOT purchase from a department store.
  There is a reason those instruments are inexpensive!
• Go to a music store and get a good instrument.
  Start with a student model but choose a quality brand.
• Not sure where to start?
  Ask a SVNHM staff member or your private teacher for guidance.

Choosing a Quality Instrument

If you are a beginner, start with a student model rather than investing in a professional-grade instrument right away.

Whether you are looking for a student model or a more advanced instrument, make sure it is a reputable brand.

Examples include: Yamaha, Bach, Selmer, Buffet, Fox, Artley, Gemeinhardt, Armstrong, LeBlanc-Vito, Besson, Holton, King, Ludwig, Vic Firth.

This list is not exhaustive – there are many other fine brands.  Getting guidance from a reputable store or teacher (or SVNHM staff member!) is important.

Start Here: Getting Your First Instrument

If you’re just getting started, Leonards Music (all instruments) and Johnson String Instrument (strings) are two of the most commonly recommended options for SVNHM members. For used instruments, Music Go Round is also worth checking out.

Here is a list of local and online stores that may offer a range of services, including instrument rentals and sales, as well as sheet music and supplies. Most also provide service and repairs.

Where known, we’ve noted some of the services offered—but availability may vary. Some of these stores have limited or no web presence, so a quick call or visit is often the best way to get guidance. While online retailers can be helpful, especially if you know exactly what you’re looking for, beginners will often benefit from working directly with a local store.

When it’s time to upgrade, make sure you are moving upward in quality, not sideways to an instrument of similar quality. Working with a private teacher is often the best way to find the right instrument for your needs.
