New Horizons International Music Association
SVNHM is part of a larger international community through the New Horizons International Music Association (NHIMA)—our parent organization.
Did you know there are over 250 New Horizons groups—bands, orchestras, and choruses—all over the world? There are several close to home, too—five official New Horizons groups in Massachusetts, plus a few others based on NHIMA principles (but not officially part of the organization).
What is NHIMA?
NHIMA (pronounced “NEE-ma”) is a wonderful organization from many points of view.
The advice Diane received from NHIMA was indispensable when she was starting SVNHM. One of the nicest things about NHIMA is that they offer lots of suggestions and ideas—but there are no rigid rules for how to run your group.
At their core, New Horizons programs are built around a simple idea:
New Horizons Music programs provide entry points to music making for adults—many with no musical experience at all, as well as those who were active in school music programs but have been inactive for a long period.

What Can I Do With NHIMA?
NHIMA offers all kinds of ways to get involved beyond your weekly rehearsal.
Zoom Classes
In recent years, NHIMA has offered Zoom classes at a very reasonable price—everything from beginner ukulele to understanding different types of jazz, to “What is the conductor doing up there?”
There have also been sessions on Beatles music, and our own Dan (Foote) Percussion has taught a couple of percussion classes. Diane has taught several classes over the years—and is always thinking about what she might offer next.
A fun story—Diane once had someone join a class from Australia. She didn’t exactly “come to class,” but watched the recording at a much more reasonable time for her!

Camps
NHIMA also offers music camps—some for band, some for orchestra—held in different locations. Find information on the NHIMA website - New Horizons International Music Association - NHIMA Camps.
Diane founded the Snow Pond New England Adult Music Camp in Sidney, Maine, back in 2012, and it is based on New Horizons principles. Diane and Linda taught there for many years.
These days, John (McLellan) Conductor and Dan (Foote) Percussion are teaching there, along with Becky (Leonard) Clarinet/Sax.
Travel Opportunities
NHIMA also organizes group travel experiences—such as band tours in Europe—where musicians can perform, explore new cities, and connect with other New Horizons groups.
A number of our members have taken part in these trips, which have included performances and visits to cities like Prague, Salzburg, Vienna, and Budapest.
