Getting started
You can get started at any time during the year—there’s no “right” time to begin.
The best thing to do is reach out to Diane first. We’ll talk through where you are, answer your questions, and make sure you feel comfortable before coming to a rehearsal.

Wonderful—we’d love to have you join us!
You can come to a rehearsal at any time. Just be sure to contact Diane ahead of time so we can be ready for you (have music, a chair, and anything else you’ll need).

I play an instrument, but I’d like to learn a new one
That’s something we can absolutely help with—and it’s more common than you might think!
We can connect you with a teacher and help you get started, and you may be ready to join the group sooner than you expect—often within just a few weeks on easier pieces.

I’ve never played before, but I’d love to learn
You are in exactly the right place.
Many of our members started as complete beginners—some had never touched an instrument before joining us.
The quickest way to get going is usually with a few private lessons, and we’re happy to help you find a teacher.
You’ll typically be ready to join once you’re comfortable with some basic rhythms (like eighth notes) and have a range of about an octave and a half.
And one important thing—don’t wait until you feel “ready.” You may never feel ready!

How Do I Join?

- Then decide if you’d like to register
We’ll make sure you have everything you need before you come—so you can just focus on enjoying the experience.
Common questions
Does it cost anything?
There is a tuition charge to support our instructors and program. Scholarships and financial aid are available for those who need them—just contact Diane. We make it easy, with no forms to fill out.
What if I don't like it?
Then you don’t stay! That’s why we encourage you to come to a rehearsal and try it out before registering. No pressure—just come and see how it feels.
Can I join if I play an instrument other than strings, winds, or percussion?
Guitar, piano, ukulele, bagpipes, or another instrument? Sorry, we don’t currently have a program for these instruments. We focus on orchestral strings and Concert Band winds and percussion.
